Westfield, MA, July 7, 2016 — Westfield Babe Ruth Baseball is fielding three tournament teams this summer. There are two teams for 14-year-olds and one team for 13-year-olds.
The 14-year-olds are in the unusual situation of having two tournament teams this year. Westfield is hosting the 14-year-old Babe Ruth World Series this summer, August 10-18. As the host city, Westfield is able to enter a team into the tournament automatically. A second team will attempt to play their way into the World Series.
The World Series host team is not allowed to participate in any of the preliminary Babe Ruth tournaments at the District, State, and Regional levels that normally form the path to the World Series. As League President Dan Welch explained, “The World Series host team is not allowed to play in lower levels of tournament play because of the potential to knock another team out of a chance to make it to the World Series.” With their spot in the World Series already secured, the Westfield World Series host team will spend the month of July participating in non-Babe Ruth tournaments in Massachusetts and Connecticut in order to train, sharpen their skills, and stay game-ready.
A second team of 14-year-olds will compete for the opportunity to play in the World Series. According to Welch, “Babe Ruth League allows us to field a second team of regular season players, and that team can compete through all levels of play. The state champion team from the host state gets automatic entry into the World Series. So if Westfield’s second team of 14-year-olds wins the Western Massachusetts State Championship, they will gain entrance to the World Series, giving Westfield two teams in the World Series. If Westfield places second in the State Tournament, they can still make the World Series, but they will have to win the New England Regional Tournament to get there.”
The 14-year-old Western Massachusetts State Tournament begins Friday, July 8, at Bullens Field in Westfield, with Westfield playing Pittsfield at 7:00. Play continues Saturday, July 9, with Westfield at NipMuc Mendon/Upton (Worcester area) at 2:00. On Sunday, July 10, it will be NipMuc at Pittsfield at 2:00. The tournament concludes Tuesday, July 12, with the championship game at Westfield’s Bullens Field at 7:00. The winner goes to the World Series in Westfield and the second-place finisher will compete in the New England Regional Tournament in Bridgton, Maine, starting July 23.
Meanwhile, the 13-year-old team is playing for the chance to travel to Ottumwa, Iowa, for the World Series for their age group. Westfield and Pittsfield will compete in the 13-year-old Western Massachusetts State Tournament, starting Saturday, July 9, with Westfield at Pittsfield at 4:00. They play again at Westfield’s Bullens Field on Sunday, July 10, at 4:00. If necessary, another game will follow the 4:00 game Sunday to determine the winner of the State Tournament. The winner of the State Tournament will travel to the New England Regional Tournament in Rochester, New Hampshire, starting July 23. The winner of the Regional Tournament will head to Iowa for the 13-year-old World Series, August 11-18.
